Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
