A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
